 :
I really want to do a triathlon, but I have such a fear of swimming
in a lake! What can I do to fix this?

:   Well, I don't know if we can fix your fear of open water swimming
with an email, but maybe we can help!

First, you can participate in a triathlon without swimming in a lake.
Many triathlons particularly the very
early and late season races are
indoors and use a lap pool for the swim. You could also try a duathlon
where you would only participate in the running and cycling.

Now, back to the fear itself... Try to find a
group or team that holds
open water swims in your area. Swimming with a buddy or group could
help with your fear. These groups often have someone in a kayak
keeping an eye on the swimmers just to be extra safe. Make sure you
talk to the group leader or coach at the open water swim so they know
about your fear.

When you are out there swimming in the lake or ocean, try to stay
focused on some aspect of your stroke technique. Pick something very
basic like finishing your stroke or blowing air out of your nose
underwater before lifting your head for a breath. This will help you to
keep your focus internal and away from the fear.
